NMU Pilot Course "Maritime Transport and the Environment" in Kiel

The NMU pilot on “Maritime Transport & the Environment” (MT&E) started on Wednesday, March 3rd with a one day face-to-face session at the campus of Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany. More than 30 apprentices of shipping agent and NMU stakeholder “Sartori & Berger” and others enrolled for this first test of the newly developed module that focuses on the environmental impacts of shipping.

Lecturers were Prof Dr Thomas Pawlik and Susanne Neumann (Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Germany), Prof Erik Fridell (IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Gothenburg) and Matthias Hahn (Kiel University of Applied Sciences).

Next to an overview and in depth insight into the subject of all types of ship emissions, the MT&E module also offers theory and practical evidence of ways to manage these. Starting with laws and regulations, technical approaches, managerial concepts and process innovations are covered as well as technological innovations and improvements.

Thomas Pawlik moves to UAS Bremen

photo of Thomas PawlikThe NMU project partner Prof Thomas Pawlik was appointed by the University of Applied Sciences Bremen for professorship in “Maritime Management”. As of this month he is strengthening the University’s centre of Maritime Studies.

 

The endowment was made by Bremen Rhederverein to create this new professorship for the next five years.

Thomas tasks within the NMU project from his previous post at UAS Kiel are being transferred to UAS Bremen to allow for a continued development of the project.

Farewell to Phanthian Zuesongdham

photo pf Phanthian ZuesongdhamPhanthian Zuesongdham of Jacobs University Bremen left the NMU project, because she has taken up a new responsiblity at the Hamburg Port Authority.

As the coordinator for the project dissemination, Phanthian was a great support to the project. With her ideas and energy, she made an essential contribution to the success of the project. All NMU project partners would like to thank Phanthian for her work and wish her great success in the new position.

Indah Lengkong is replacing Phantian and will coordinate future NMU dissemination activities.

   

NMU Pilot Course "Ship Knowledge" will run in March 2010

NMU project partners are currently developing NMU modules.  Different pilot courses targeting different target groups of students and stakeholders are running simultaneously during this Spring semester at each partner university.

 

The Workgroup Maritime Logistics of Jacobs University Bremen has been developed an e-learning module element called “Ship Knowledge”. The e-learning course will run for 5 weeks starting from 8th March 2010.
NMU Stakeholders and students from NMU partner universities are invited to participate in this course. The registration deadline is until 3rd March 2010.


The Ship knowledge module introduces different types of ships, which are used widely nowadays. It describes the ships various characteristics and respective types of cargoes and their applications. Some 3-dimentional views of ships are provided, therefore learners can visualise or indicate each part, space, the size of compartment compared to the whole ship.

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) visited the Transport Research Institute (TRI) in Edinburgh on February 17th. The TRI NMU team, Kevin Cullinane, Gordon Wilmsmeier and Alf Baird, presented the NMU project and examples of the NMU Modules to Tony Young and Graeme Nimmo and discussed potentials for future joint activities.
