TRI Conference “Reducing the impact of emission”

Around sixty delegates, with wide-ranging academic, industrial, and policy-making backgrounds, attended a one-day conference entitled ‘Reducing the impact of emissions from shipping and aviation’, held at Edinburgh City Chambers, on 9th September, 2011. The meeting was jointly organised by the Transport Research Institute of Edinburgh Napier University and the Scottish Centre of the Royal Meteorological Society. The Northern Maritime University was the main sponsor of the event.

  • Jan Fuglestvedt, of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), Oslo, gave a presentation on ‘Current and future climate impacts of transport emissions’. He highlighted that policymakers and the public often asked different questions concerning the impacts of emissions on climate.
  • John Aitken, from Shipping Emissions Abatement and Trading (SEAaT), gave an overview of air emissions from the maritime industry. His organisation represents a wide cross-section of the industry, with the exception of the major container shipping companies.
  • Haldane Dodd, of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), Geneva, discussed the aviation industry’s plans to reduce emissions.
  • Michele Acciaro, of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Oslo, discussed future regulatory regimes related to air emissions from shipping.
  • Emma Irvine, from the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, gave a presentation entitled ‘Exploring the feasibility of climate-optimised flight routing’.
  • NMU project partner Erik Fridell, from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, explored the possibilities for abating emissions to air from shipping. His presentation can be downloaded here.
  • John Blackwood, of Aerospace and Marine International, Aberdeen, described how his company provided optimum ship routing information to customers.
